  • April 2005 - August 2005. Snapfish / Hewlett Packard: Software Design Engineer
    As part of the consumer imaging and printing group of HP: designed a web based ad reporting tool, and developed general internal applications.
  • Sept 2004 - April 2005. Snapfish San Francisco CA: Server Side Java Developer
    Development of Snapfish Outbound Mail Engine using Java and Oracle PL/SQL. Migrated from Weblogic to Tomcat so that the number of servers could be scaled without increasing licensing costs, and from Solaris to Linux. Made design changes that effected a 3x performance increase (and permitted scalability with more servers). Fixed numerous bugs and pushed CAN-SPAM compliance.
  • Nov 2002 - Sept 2004, Edusoft San Francisco CA:
    • July 2004 - Aug 2004, Software Engineer -- Special Ops Group
      Software maintenance and system integration.
    • Dec 2003 - July 2004, Software Engineer -- Software Infrastructure Group
      Development of core web based Java application, as well as working on internal tools. A few projects included re-architecture of the login and permission system, building up Junit testing system, and the automation/generation of test databases.
    • Nov 2002 - Dec 2003, Data Integration Engineer -- Data Integration Team
      In a small startup environment, dealt with all aspects of data integration. Assisted customers with data export procedures, tracked customer requests and issues, trained and assisted management of data entry personnel, wrote tools to parse customer data using Perl and Java, developed tools to import data into production databases, ran command line tools to import customer data, resolved all data issues and wrote tools using Java and SQL to fix problems in the existing production data.
  • Sept 2002 - Nov 2002, Prance Corp. San Francisco CA: Developer Managed client requests. Developed a system to generate real time maps displaying lift status information for ski resorts. Projects used OpenScript, Toolbook, ASP, PHP, JavaScript and HTML.

  • Summer 2000 , Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford CT: Summer Intern In the advanced design and business development group: used C++ to develop a pulse doppler radar model. Radar model was used for analysis of helicopter susceptibilities in simulations. Wrote a GUI application in Java/Swing to simplify the addition of new entities to the simulation, and otherwise further developed the simulation system.
  • Fall/Spring 1999 , University of Massachusetts - Vision Lab: Undergraduate Programmer Performed data entry, learned about computer vision, and wrote software in C++ to test 3D line data extracted from photographs.

  • Completed 2000 mile thru-hike of Appalachian Trail in August, 1998.
  • Taught English to high school students in Sichuan, China, Summer of 2001 and to Korean high school students in Dalian, China, Fall of 2007.
  • Basic knowledge of Spanish enhanced by travel in Mexico and South America.
  • Intermediate Mandarin Chinese
  • Sailboat racing and long distance cruising. Sailed mostly single-handed in mostly engineless 32' sailboat from San Francisco California to Cebu, Philippines from November 2005 - April 2007. Delivered C&S 37 from northern to southern Philippines June 2007. Sailed aboard a friend's Chinook 34 from Japan to the Philippines in January 2008.
